A 6-week Introduction to the Alexander Technique for Musicians on Zoom

Join Hannah for an introduction to the Alexander Technique, widely studied among performing artists to support poise, confidence, and ease in playing. Each class will be informative, interactive, and fun. Each student will have a chance to play and receive 1-1 coaching from Hannah. Zoom in from the comfort of your own home and connect with fellow musicians in a supportive, non-judgmental community space. All sessions will be recorded and shared with those who are registered.

Class Topics:
Alexander core concepts:
- Conscious awareness: using your mind power to shift from unconscious habit to conscious, intentional action
- Use: the way you use your mind, body, and emotions in activity
- Psycho-physical unity: the whole self as instrument of artistic expression
- End-gaining: narrowly focusing on a goal, which can lead to contraction of use and excess tension
- Inhibition: noticing habits, pausing, and giving yourself choice in how you respond, speak, move, or act
- Primary Relationship: the dynamic balancing and re-balancing of the head in relation to the spine, as it affects the coordination of the whole self
- Direction: a form of spatial awareness, especially with respect to your limbs as you move in space
- Means-whereby: how you do what you do
- Use affects functioning: how you use your mind, body, and emotions in activity affects your overall functioning, or overall wellbeing
- Expanded or unified field of awareness: unifying one’s awareness of the whole self, the instrument/voice, the music, the audience, and the environment

- Managing performance anxiety
- Fine-tuning sensory and kinesthetic awareness
- Recognizing typical stress responses: Fight/Flight/Freeze/Fawn
- Grounding and accessing the innate postural support system
- Inviting more agency in how we react to stimuli and stressful situations
- Constructive rest as practice
- Natural breathing and vocal production
- Body mapping of the head-spine, ribs, arms, and hips

Cost:
To register for the course and secure your spot, please send a $50 deposit by Monday, October 19, 2026.

For the full class, I am asking for suggested donations on a sliding scale between $120 and $210 ($20/class – $35/class). I would love for this work to be accessible to all, regardless of financial means. Please pay what feels comfortable to you, based on your particular financial situation and how you choose to honor my work. At the end of the course, I will send a reminder email requesting that participants pay the balance.
