Dear friends,
One of the most difficult times in my own life was the period right after the birth of my son. Despite a healthy baby, a supportive partner, and a welcoming co-housing community, I experienced social dislocation, post-partum depression, and a confusing shift in identity from paid employee to full-time parent.
I also went through an intense birth, and my body took some time to heal. My whole self and my whole world transformed and has never been the same.
Societal norms encourage us to experience and express joy around the birth of a child. We are less skilled at supporting the birthing parent and their fellow caregiver(s) through the sleepless nights, the mood swings, and the stress of caring for another human being.
My Alexander Technique teacher Ellen Melamed provided the kind of steady, warm, generous support I so badly needed during that time. Bi-weekly lessons with her nourished my whole self; both the conversation and the hands-on work supported me through the physical, emotional, and identity changes. She met me where I was, in all the glorious messiness, with humor and care.
Ellen was taken by COVID in the winter of 2021, a loss that still reverberates in my life. She knew I wanted to train to become an Alexander Technique teacher, so her partner gave me her massage table and a treasure trove of her books, full of pencil markings with her thoughtful comments. Those objects and her spirit live on as inspirations for my own teaching journey.
Because of Ellen’s profound impact during a tender time in my own life, I feel drawn to support fellow parents and caregivers of all ages.
